42nd Street - the hottest ticket in town

Review

AFTER months of rigorous preparation and rehearsals, the curtain opened on Portrush Music Society’s 42nd Street on Saturday night to a full house at the Riverside Theatre.

There was an audible buzz around the theatre foyer as the theatre patrons eagerly awaited the call to take their seats for the opening night . The lights dimmed, the audience fell silent. The stage was behind curtain, which is new for this theatre, giving an air of secrecy.

The orchestra came to life “Julian Marsh is doing a show…”

The curtain opened exposing an amazing stage with a tap dance troupe pounding rhythmically to the beat of the music - the opening audition scene. It set a high standard which everyone thought could not be continued. We were wrong. Dance after dance, song after song and all on stage delivered a performance of a lifetime.

The audience was brought into the life of a 1930s Broadway theatre. A “show-within-a-show” worked perfectly with costumes and staging right on the money! The finale of 42nd Street finished the show on a high.

It would be wrong to name individuals on stage as they all contributed to a fantastic team performance.

It is a show that you don’t want to finish and judging by the instant standing ovation at the end, there are a lot of others who feel the same.
