A busy time ahead for the Marconi Radio Group

It could be said that the members of the Marconi Radio Group keep themselves busy on the radio airwaves letting the world know that North Antrim played a very important part in wireless history, for it was between Rathlin Island and Ballycastle that the first ever over-water radio signals were sent back in the late 1880s.

But away from radios the Marconi Group members have proved that they can also turn their hands to running social events as well, such as The Marconi Festival, which they stage each year on the first Sunday of August at Ballycastle seafront.

The group is of course always very grateful to The Community Festival Fund of Moyle District Council for its financial assistance in the running of the different events.

And from all accounts it would appear as if the group is going to be extra busy with events this coming Summer, for as well as staging the annual Marconi Festival, which will be celebrating its 14th birthday this time around, ‘A Festival of Transport’ is being planned for Saturday the 16th and Sunday the 17th of August.

The festivities on the Saturday will take place at the Quay Road sports complex and will incorporate vintage tractors, a tractor road-run, classic cars, a car boot sale, arts and crafts, a look back at transport from bygone days of yore and country practices such as baking bread.

There will also of course be lots of attractions in place for the very young, and the route for the tractor road run, after leaving Ballycastle, will visit Watertop Farm before undertaking a scenic mountain drive around by The Vanishing Lake.

The activities on the Sunday will also take place at the Quay Road sports complex and will take the form of what’s known as ‘Show ‘N’ Shine’, an event which is very popular right around the country these days amongst good folks who take great pride in presenting their vehicles in immaculate condition, both inside and out.
