A day in the life of a Technical Director

Aaron Shimmons is Technical Director at Helios IT, one of Northern Ireland’s leading technology support companies which recently re-located to Lisburn.

Aaron is originally from Ballinderry and after a short time away in Preston and then Belfast, has relocated back to his Lisburn roots, with his wife Sarah.

Since graduating from University he has worked in the IT industry and says it was a natural progression to work for a Managed Services Provider. He has been working with the company for over eight years.

I am normally at the office for around 8am. I usually review my diary first thing to see what meetings are planned, then I’ll meet with the Support Team to review our client monitoring systems. These systems enable us to focus on preventative maintenance, which means less downtime and inconvenience for our customers. Once this review is completed, I will continue to work on various active projects, which could include developing and testing new products that will further enhance our customer’s experience. I also spend a portion of my week meeting with new clients, and auditing their networks and computer systems.

The principal services provided by Helios IT are: Managed IT Support, Network Infrastructure, Business ICT Consultancy, as well as cloud based services such as Hosted Exchange email, Online backup, Email & Web Security, Disaster Recovery, and Cloud telephony (VoIP). Every network we maintain is monitored 24/7 thanks to our specialist cloud based service desk, and support is instant, thanks to our permanently manned service desk, manned by real engineers not call handlers.

Our customers appreciate our service, and the fact that 90% of all faults are resolved in just one call. Our mission is simple: to make technology an asset for business, not a problem. The systems which we have developed and invested in have made this a reality for hundreds of customers throughout our 12 years in business.

Lisburn has superb fibre broadband which is essential for our office and means we can deliver an even better service to clients. The new office is a modern open plan space and is perfect for our growing business.

I normally finish work around 6pm and then head home, but if there’s an emergency I am available to sort it out. I do enjoy my work. We have a great team in place, the craic is really good, and the business is going from strength to strength.

When I am not working, I enjoy running in the mountains, and recently took part in the Mourne Marathon, where I bettered my time from last year, placing in the top 20. I am generally a very active person and also enjoy rock climbing, as well as martial arts. When I am not training, I am socialising with friends and family – ensuring I get a good work life balance.
