A summer of side-splitting comedy at the Courtyard

The Northern Irish summer is always unpredictable, but whatever the weather has in store this year, audiences can enjoy some great comedy weekend nights out at the Courtyard Theatre, Ballyearl during the summer months.

Some top amateur dramatics groups will perform comical tales of murder, mystery and relationship capers throughout July, August and September including, Cash on Delivery, Absent Friends, Surprise Package, The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatics Society’s Production of Macbeth, Don’t Tell the Wife, When We Are Married, Bride in Hand and Holiday Flush.

The first of the side-splitting plays at the Courtyard Theatre will be Belvoir Players’ production of ‘Cash on Delivery’ on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 July. ‘Cash on Delivery’ follows the tale of Eric Swan, who has pocketed thousands of pounds through fraudulent DSS claims, aided by his uncle George and unbeknown to his wife, Linda. When Norman Bassett (the lodger) opens the doors to the DSS inspector, deceptive mayhem follows - as do the undertaker, the bereavement counsellor, psychiatrist, a corpse, the ominous Ms Cowper and a rather rebellious washing machine.

Or come along to the Courtyard Theatre on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 August for a classic comedy of manners and social embarrassment served up with a slice of deliciously black humour in ‘Absent Friends’. When Colin loses his fiancée, his married friends invite him round for comfort. As the tea starts to pour, it’s clear the trouble is brewing with a wickedly funny blend of jealousy, infidelity and barely concealed loathing.

Bernard Clarkson, theatre manager said: “The Courtyard summer theatre comedy nights promise to be a great alternative to any inclement weather destined for our shores. Yet again, we are thrilled to have attracted such a high calibre of amateur performers this year, from both local drama groups as well as those from Belfast, Holywood and Lisburn, providing perfect light hearted comic relief and indoor sunshine.”
