A ‘time’ to remember

The event was held in the Museum at the Mill and used the theme of ‘time’ to help people build a page of images for their scrapbooks.

Coordinator Jacqui Milliken explained: “Those the came along brought images along to help put together a page for their books and I chose the theme time because people of all ages can take part as it is something we all have in common.

“For my own piece I chose a picture of my grandson Joel, whose 17th birthday it was that day. But 17 years ago it was a very different story as he was born 12 weeks early weighing just three pounds. His mother, my daughter, was also very ill and it was a real life or death situation.

“That was my inspiration on the day and I called my creation ‘The first time I ever saw your face’.

“Others had some great ideas. Some were funny, some emotional, some sad, some interesting and some imaginative. For example one of the girls had twins and called her page ‘double time’ while another woman found pictures of her husband in school with his tie all over the place and she called it ‘Time to straighten your tie’.

“Each person had a very different perspective on the subject and left with their story of what a moment in time meant to them.”

Jacqui added: “People these days take so many pictures and they are more often than not left on a computer or put away and never seen again.

“I encourage everyone to tell the ‘who, what, where, when and why’ of each picture and the scrapbooking exercise helps build a lasting legacy for people.

“Also the venue at the Museum at the Mill really helped to create an atmosphere for the event - it really did lend itself to the concept behind the idea.

“Scrapbooking became popular in parts of America sometime ago and Newtownabbey Borough Council was almost visionary in the way it established classes in Ballyearl ahead of others and they have to be congratulated on that.”
