Ancestry wesbite launch

Limavady Ancestry, the name of both the website and exhibition, will provide people with information about the various types of sources and documents that exist which can help them trace their ancestors. From census records and wills, to church records and gravestone inscriptions, each source will be examined in depth.

In the exhibition, copies of records from organisations including the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), the National Archives of Ireland and the General Register Office of Northern Ireland (GRONI) will be on display for people to view. Items from Limavady Museum’s collections will also be on display, such as landed estate records, maps, yearbooks, school registers and roll books.

Victoria Newberry, Museum/Heritage Officer comments, “The exhibition will also feature examples of research belonging to local people who have already traced their family tree. These examples will really help to give others a taste of what they could find if they started looking in to their own family’s history.”

The website, meanwhile, will provide a detailed breakdown of all the types of records mentioned in the exhibition. Links to relevant organisations, websites and places of interest will also be available on the website for those who are keen to find out more.

Clare Quinn, Tourism Development Officer notes, “Through this project, we really hope to increase the level of service and facilities provided for those seeking to research their family tree. We also want to inspire people to find out more about their past.”

All are welcome to attend the launch of the website and exhibition on 10 November at 11am and admission to the exhibition is free. The exhibition continues in the Centre’s Ritter Gallery until January 26. Galleries are open Monday-Friday 9.30am-5pm and Saturday 10am-2pm.
