At home with bat and guitar

WARINGSTOWN cricketer David Dawson is equally at home with a cricket bat as he is with a guitar.

The talented singer has been garnering acclaim since bringing his music to the masses by performing some intimate acoustic gigs and leading worship in Lurgan Elim.

Committed Christian David first got involved in music around seven years ago when his Youth Pastor Rick Preston demanded he should learn the guitar.

He commented: “I don’t know whether it will ever happen as career or anything, but the thought of being in a band, touring the world and sharing songs that inspire people to live life to the full is what inspired me to take up music.

The 23-year-old said: “My biggest influences are Christian musicians such as Chris Tomlin, Hillsong, Matt Redman and more recently Bethel Church in California. I also love the likes of U2, John Mayer and Coldplay

When asked to describe his style he said: “It depends, when I play in church, weddings and other Christian events I am with a band, so it would be quite rocky and up beat but I also do the odd fundraiser which would be more low key acoustic style music.

“I prefer as little noise as possible to let the true acoustics such as voice, guitar and piano ring out.”

He added: “I’ve written a few but nothing you would rant a rave about. It’s something I would like to put more effort into it over the next while. It can be very time consuming and difficult to write your own material especially when there is so much out there influencing the melody you choose and the lyrics you compose.

“The very few songs I have written cover simply life, love and God and if I wanted to make a career out of it, it would be writing songs for the church.”

David, who has been with Waringstown Cricket Club since he was in primary three, is a Waringstown man born and bred.

He has several songs online on YouTube which can be accessed by searching for ‘David Dawson’. His online discography includes ‘The Hardest Part’ by Coldplay and ‘We Found Love’ by Rihanna.

In terms of gigs David said: “I’ve a formal coming up soon and a few other church-related events in the pipe line but I lead worship once a month at Lurgan Elim so feel free to come along as the door is always open.”
