Ballymoney Uncovered Field Trip

LAST week, Ballymoney Museum organized a bus tour to some of the most fascinating archaeological sites in and around the Borough.

The day was a sure success, with well-known archaeologist Jon Marshall entertaining an enthusiastic crowd of 28 with account of the area's fascinating history - and it all took place under sunny North Antrim skies!

Sites visited included the Plantation Bawn at Movanagher, Dooey's Cairn, the best preserved Court Tomb in the Causeway Coast area, and the Chi-Rho stone (Old Patrick), the oldest Christian symbol in the Borough. After lunch in Ballymoney Museum, where participants had a chance to see the newly refurbished galleries, the group headed out to Ballylough to see the Macquillan Tower House and Derrykeighan Graveyard.

The trip was organized as part of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency's Archaeology Days 2010 programme, and judging by the participants' reaction a tour next year would prove just as popular!
