Big Tom to play Tullyglass

BIG TOM and the Mainliners have special reason for looking forward to their date in the Tullyglass House Hotel, Ballymena on Saturday night.

It will be very much in the nature of a re-union as many fans of the band who danced to their music in the Flamingo over forty years ago will be coming to wallow in a night of nostalgia.

It was when ‘Gentle Mother’ occupied the No 1 slot in the Irish country music charts that Big Tom was at his peak and Ballymena was a very happy hunting ground for the band.

“WE have very happy memories of playing in Ballymena in the days of the showband boom,” reflects Big Tom, “There were always capacity crowds and a terrific atmosphere. Those were good days in every sense but while things have changed, it is still very encouraging to note the strong interest in country music that there still is in Ballymena.”

Big Tom and the Mainliners only perform occasionally nowadays but they are particularly keen to grace the stage in the Tullyglass House Hotel.

“It is a venue which is helping to promote country dancing on an ongoing basis and this has to be commended. We are looking forward to seeing many familiar faces there,” adds Big Tom.

Just last week Big Tom and his band played to a capacity crowd in the Glencarn Hotel, Castleblayney to mark the 25th anniversary of the opening night there when they were also on stage.

“It was a brilliant night and many of the patrons who were there told us that they will be in the Tullyglass next Saturday so we are looking forward to seeing them,” smiles Big Tom.

It looks like as if the ‘house full’ notice will have to go up on this occasion!
