Butterfly expert at Garden Club

In a year when the butterfly population soared due to an extended period of favourable weather it was fitting that Catherine Bertrand, Senior Regional Officer, Butterfly Conservation Northern Ireland, was the speaker at the Ballymena Garden Club’s November meeting.

After pointing out the differences between butterflies and moths Catherine described, with the aid of slides, the common or ‘Wider Countryside’ butterflies and moths which are the species most likely to be encountered in our area.

She then progressed to list the rarer or ‘Specialist’ butterflies and moths which are much more restricted to a particular food plant and habitat. Following a question time members were given a copy of a beautifully illustrated colour guide to the butterflies and moths of the Causeway Coast and Glens.
