Cafe Church leader Richard Houston says: “It takes place in the Oasis Cafe and is an expression of Church but not as we know it.

“We put out tables and chairs as you would find in any standard coffee shop. As you arrive you just sit where you want with whom you have arrived and chat, you get a coffee and you get something to eat as acoustic music

plays in the background.

“As the hour progresses we unfold elements of conventional church in a non traditional way. We do some singing but we don’t have to stand and sing. We hear a short Bible talk; there is a Bible reading and we do offer prayer,” he said.

One of the additonal components of Cafe Church is that participants can interact with what is being said.

Richard is keen to stress, however, that Cafe Church is ‘not’ for Christians who have simply become bored with conventional services. It is aimed at people who may have become ‘dechurched’ and who may see worship as irrelevant to them, it was pointed out.

Cafe Church ran for two successful seasons last year and attracted large numbers. Those who attend need not worry about childcare as creche and Sunday School run simultaneously with Cafe Church which is located upstairs in Oasis Cafe.
