Calling Michigan

PORTSTEWART Library has twinned with Antwerp Sunshine Branch Library, Mattawan, for the Michigan library’s Summer Reading Challenge, which has the theme of One World, Many Stories.

Portstewart Library sent book reviews, craft activities, a DVD and CD of the Giant’s Causeway, by local author and artist Stephen Hall, and some little gifts to their colleagues in Mattawan.

In turn, they sent a box of goodies including postcards written by some of their summer readers, photos from their sidewalk chalk contest, a Michigan colouring book, some maps and locally made gifts.

Libraries NI are also inviting local children to call into Portstewart Library, any time until the end of August, to recommend the books they have read and enjoyed on “Greetings from Portstewart” postcards, which will then be sent to Antwerp Sunshine Branch Library.

To celebrate this partnership, Portstewart Library has also created a display and would like to invite anyone interested in viewing this, to call into the library during library opening hours.

Valerie Christie, Children’s Services Manager for Libraries NI, explained: “By twinning with Antwerp Sunshine Library, the children in Portstewart and library staff have enjoyed a fun cultural exchange during the summer and local children have shared their book reviews and summer reading ideas with similar children in Michigan, which has also created new friendships along the way.”
