Can you produce an iconic image?

Capturing an iconic image of the historic City Walls is the challenge being issued to Londonderry’s amateur photographers.

As part of ‘Walls 400!’ - an imaginative initiative by the Foyle Camera Club and the Holywell Trust - local snappers are invited to submit photos which best reflect the theme: ‘Derry’s Historic City Walls - a monument of national significance’.

A total prize fund in excess of £1,500 is up for grabs for the winning entries.

All entries must be submitted by the closing date of September 28, 2012, with the winners announced on November 30.

The winning entries will be displayed at a public exhibition to be staged in the Walled City.

The competition is broken into three categories: junior (under 10), youth (under 18) and adult (over 18).

The winner of the junior section will be awarded £100, first prize in the youth category will get £200 while the winning entry in the adult section will receive £400.

During National Heritage Week (August 18-26) and European Heritage Open Days (September 8-9), the Foyle Camera Club will organise a series of workshops on practical techniques to capture heritage. Further details of these events will be revealed at a later date.

Mark Lusby, project co-ordinator of the Holywell Trust’s City Walls Heritage Project, explained that, with 2013 marking the 400th anniversary of the City Walls, the winning images will be used as part of a range of activities promoting the use of the historic ramparts as a resource for learning and participation.

He added: “Heritage sites of significance across Ireland, such as the Giant’s Causeway, Cliffs of Moher, Rock of Cashel, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge are easily recognisable from their signature photographs.

“The Walls of Derry, as the largest monument in state care in Northern Ireland and located in a constantly changing urban landscape, present a particular challenge to photographers.
