Canadian fiddler set for storming Portstewart appearance

Flowerfield Arts Centre patrons have often expressed their appreciation for bluegrass, and it doesn’t come much better than world-champion fiddler, step dancer and singer April Verch and her band, who appear at the Portstewart venue on Thursday, May 21 at 8pm.

April and the band have established a reputation as consummate performers, winning over audiences with their incredible musicianship, charm, humour and seemingly boundless energy. Verch has never sounded more comfortable in her skin than she does now, in the second decade of her career as an internationally touring Canadian fiddler, step dancer and singer/songwriter.

Now on her milestone 10th album The Newpart, with producer Casey Driessen, Verch digs deep into songs and tunes from the era before the often-mined mid-century heyday of bluegrass and folk.

With ten albums and years of touring under her belt, she has moved from upstart prodigy to mature and reflective songwriter, interpreter, and storyteller.

Bassist and claw hammer banjo player Cody Walters and guitarist Hayes Griffin, round off this incredible outfit with style and flair, and the band has been attracting rave reviews: ‘Her playing is quite breathtaking….as good as it gets’, said fRoots magazine.

Verch has a reputation for whooping it up in her live performances, so be sure to bring a store of adrenaline – not to mention your elasticated pelvic girdles.

She dubs her style “North Americana with a little bit of world music” and blends several genres of folk music to create a truly unique sound.

And did we mention the show’s thrilling grand finale? Step dancing while fiddling? It really needs to be seen to be believed, as Verch pulls off pristine double-time triplets with her feet, often executing two entirely different intricate rhythmic patterns at once.

It has to be seen to be believed. Tickets for the show are priced at £12, and theyre available from reception at Flowerfield Arts Centre.

The ticket price includes a complimentary glass of wine or fruit juice at the interval. You can buy your ticket over the phone using your credit or debit card on (028) 7083 1400.
