Challenge yourself with a Sperrintrek hill walk

GET off on the right foot this year with a Sperrintrek Hill Walk.

If you are looking for a hill-walking challenge with a difference then look no further than Sperrintrek. Cookstown Tourist Information Centre have teamed up again with the Mid-Ulster Walking Club to bring you a weekend of fantastic ‘wintry’ hill walking on the 28 and 29 January.

With over 120 walkers joining the walk last year you will have plenty of company to spur you on as you tackle the trek.

On Saturday 28 January, the hill walk will take place in Crockmore (Grade A walk - 10 miles - highest point 569 metres) and Crockbrack (Grade B walk - 8 miles - highest point 526 metres).

From the quiet village of Moneyneany each group will have an upward road walk, grading into mountain tracks as you make your way west to the summit of both Crockmore and Crockbrack mountains. These are two of the most splendid view points the Sperrins can offer.

Off track walking leads the group onto Craigbane where the B group will take a downward mountain track, followed by a short road walk back to Moneyneany. The A group will continue to climb both Spelhoagh and Oughtmore mountains before finishing at the foot of Albritain Forest. Two super walks with fantastic scenery so don’t forget to bring the camera!

On Sunday 29 January is the Glenshane circuit (Grade A walk - 9 miles - highest point 479 metres). Another fantastic walk awaits the Sunday Sperrintrekker. Starting high in the Eastern Sperrins you will find yourself lost in no time in the splendour of the first summit of the day, Collnasillagh mountain.

Following the fence-line east it’s onto Bohilbreaga mountain, the highest point of the days walk. There will be a short stop towards Glenshane mountain to view Glendoo burn with its wonderful waterfall. It’s then onto Corick mountain, the last mountain of the day. From here the walk will continue to follow the track down through Glenshane Forest to finish at Shaskin Bridge.
