Charles Dickens ‘exposed’ at Market Place

THE Market Place Theatre in Armagh is staging ‘The Secret World Of Charles Dickens’, a drama celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Dickens from an unusual and intriguing stance: Charles Dickens was also a gifted amateur magician and a man intrigued by spiritualism.

In ‘The Secret World of Charles Dickens’, Ian Keable explores the writer’s love of magic and fascination in spiritualism through his books and his numerous articles and letters - all of which throw an unexpected light on his larger-than-life personality. He also revives, using contemporary humour, tricks that Dickens is known to have performed and to have been taken in by.

The award-winning comedian highlights passages that are as funny today as they must have been to Dickens’ adoring public over 100 years ago.
