Coleraine Breast Cancer Support Group

Anyone affected by breast cancer in the Coleraine area is invited to come along to the Cancer Focus Northern Ireland support group in November.

The meeting will be held on Thursday 7th November at 7.30pm in the Rathain Fold, Union Street, Coleraine.

Guest speaker for the evening is local storyteller Madeline McCully. Those attending will also have a chance to do a piece of creative writing if they wish, so you may want to bring a notebook and pen.

Madelaine said: “Creative writing provides mutual support and encouragement to help each person find and express their own voice while also offering therapeutic benefits such as relieving stress. No previous writing experience is necessary.”

Valerie Magowan, a Cancer Focus counsellor, will also be there.

Support groups are complementary to any on-going medical treatment and aim to help patients develop a holistic approach to living with cancer.

Deirdre Conlon, Care Services Manager, Cancer Focus, said: “The support group is open to anyone who has breast cancer as well as carers, family and friends and we extend a very warm welcome to all new members. There is no commitment to attend each session and everyone is welcome to come as often and for as long as they wish.

“The support group meetings are informal and there is no pressure to speak about your experiences; you can just come along and listen to what is being said. Patients in the past have gained a lot from talking to people who are in, or have been in, a similar situation as this can help to reduce feelings of anxiety, fear and isolation and improve quality of life.”

Light refreshments will also be available. For further information please call Eileen Creery at Cancer Focus on 028 9068 0742 or email [email protected].
