Colours of the Causeway Coast

Visible for miles around, the Causeway School has stood majestically on the North Antrim coast for nearly 100 years and still holds a special place in many a local’s heart. Not only is the School unique in its architectural style but it is also the only building of its type in Northern Ireland which houses five works of art by Holywood-born sculptress Sophia ‘Rosamond’ Praeger. The School is delighted to add to these works temporarily in the form of Collette’s fresh and exciting paintings.

Collette, a native of Co. Antrim, has been painting from an early age. Having been offered a place in art college at the age of 18 she instead pursued a career in nursing and remained in that field until she was able to devote herself fully to her art in 2001. Collette’s work vividly depicts the beautiful beaches and other local beauty spots along the Causeway Coast and down into the Glens of Antrim.

This exhibition represents one of the last events taking place at the Causeway School Museum under its current Heritage Lottery funding, which comes to a close at the end of September. The major aim of this funding was to make the School more accessible to the local community and beyond.

Eleanor Killough, Executive Officer, NEELB, commented: “We are extremely grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for allowing us to showcase local talent in this way. We are looking forward to hosting this special exhibition, not only for the opportunity to showcase Collette’s beautiful paintings but also to give visitors an opportunity to learn more about the Causeway School’s rich heritage”.

The exhibition will run from the 11th until the 17th September from 11am-5pm, with both paintings and prints available to purchase. A private view will take place on Thursday 10th September when the artist herself will officially open the exhibition.
