Beryl Cook was in her thirties when she picked up some paints belonging to her son and started a picture.

By 1975 she was a national treasure, with a cover of the Sunday Times Magazine and sell out exhibitions with the Portal Gallery in London.

The appeal of her instantly recognisable paintings is their directness, exuberance and the laughter they create.

Her characters are always living life to the full and her lack of pretension and warmth towards her subjects makes her the keenest of social observers.
