Creative writing class arrives as autumnal arts hit the town

Banbridge is set to host a litany of autumnal arts this October.

Schedules are a range of events and activities from music gigs to jewellery making workshops on offer, supported by Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon Borough Council.

The John Hewitt, who hosts the annual John Hewitt International Summer School in Armagh City, is once again bringing quality writers to the town.

Aspiring writers will get the chance to harness their creative writing skills in a two-hour poetry workshop with a leading Northern poet, Maria McManus, in the Old Town Hall on Thursday 15 October at 2pm.

Advance booking for this workshop is essential and book and payment can be made to the local Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon Borough offices on 02840 660605.

That same evening, the Trio of Poets reading with Maria McManus, Paul Maddern and Deirdre Cartmill will take place in the FE McWilliam Gallery & Studio at 7.30pm. Booking for this events will be at the Gallery on 028 4062 3322.

Deirdre, who was featured in last year’s Belfast Festival programme, is a poet and writer from Co Tyrone now based in Belfast. Her debut collection Midnight Solo was written from the perspective of a generation who grew up through the conflict in the north of Ireland and focuses on their struggle to envision a new normality in a post-conflict society.

Paul Maddern was born in Bermuda and lived in Canada, the USA, and England before moving to Co Down in 2000. In 2009, he was a winner in the Templar Poetry pamphlet competition with Kelpdings.

Maria McManus is a poet and playwright. She has a substantial track record as an arts trainer and facilitator in creative writing.
