Dancing with happiness asstudents excel in Scotland

Coach Wendy MacBean, who runs classes at the Caw Centre in Nelson Drive, said she was delighted with how her dancers had performed, each performing in eight dances including freestyle and freestyle pairs, rock and roll, and hip hop.

The girls were the only representatives from any dance group in Northern Ireland to attend and compete in the event, and among those to bring home a trophy was Jessica Hudson, who won first place in her section for freestyle to become the Under 16 Starter Freestyle Scottish Champion 2011.

Also celebrating was Lauren Dougherty, who won first place in hip hop to take the title of Under 16 Hip Hop Champion 2011.

The successes in Scotland are in addition to the success they dance school enjoyed at the Buncrana Championships in Co Donegal in September, when Megan Cleote became the Under 10 Hip Hop Champion 2011 by winning first place in her section.

In all the girls danced their way into taking over 150 trophies and awards home between the two competitions, which is an indication of the high standard of performance they gave.

Paying tribute to everyone who helped the girls with their success, Wendy said: “I would like to thank the management of the Caw Centre for allowing the extra use of the centre for practice and fundraising events to allow the dancers to attend both festivals and I’d also like to thank everyone in the Waterside who contributed to the fundraising events we staged.”
