Deirdre headlines at Ground

Next week will see the final of three music nights in Ground coffee shop Ballymoney organised to raise funds for McMillan Cancer Care and the Belfast City Hospital Cancer Centre.

The music on Tuesday, October 20, will be led by Deirdre Tasker (formerly Havlin) and a number of traditional musicians from the area.

Deirdre is a native of Ballymoney and well known for her talent as a flute and tin whistle player.

As a child, growing up in the town she won medals in All Ireland competitions before moving to England and playing in a number of traditional groups including the highly successful Déanta and the London Lassies, performing all over the country and further afield.

Joining Deirdre will be banjo, harp, fiddle and guitar players and singers providing music and song of the highest quality.

For the previous two Tuesday nights the coffee shop has been packed with supporters of the charities to listen to musicians from a variety of styles and the final night is expected to be a packed house.

The organisers wish to thank Gerry McLaughlin, Trevor Keys, Chris Phillips, Yasmin Walker, Nicola Hegarty, Lyndsay Hegarty, Tara Hoy, Liam McLaughlin, Alan Wade, David and Mervyn Dunlop who provided a varied programme of folk, country and modern music on the first of the evenings.

Thanks also to Dalriada School, Ballymoney, music pupils led by Heather Montgomery, Head of the school music department, provided the second evening’s entertainment and illustrated the high level of talent amongst young people in the Ballymoney area.

More about these young people in next week’s edition.

The audiences drank coffee, chatted to friends and listened appreciatively to good quality music as they enjoyed the convivial atmosphere. £450 was raised on the first Tuesday night and the organisers are expecting that the final evenings will boost this amount.

All are welcome to drop in during the evening; admission is free and there will be the opportunity to donate to the two charities being supported.
