Disco plan falls foul of floor fears

PLANS for a teenage disco in Banbridge Leisure Centre late last month fell foul of fears over the damage likely to be caused to the main sports hall floor.

Organisers withdrew their application to run the event after failing to reach agreement with the council regarding a practical or economic solution to protect the floor.

Councillors Carol Black and Marie Hamilton having voiced disappointment at the withdrawal of the application, there being a need, they said, for entertainment for 12-18 year-olds in the district, the Leisure and Development Director said the cost of resurfacing the Leisure Centre floor last year had been £10,000.

She had been advised, she said, that high heels would damage the floor and had investigated the provision of temporary flooring; however, the estimated cost of £6,000 was not affordable for the operator of the disco.
