Female creatives to convene for art conference

Eva Birthistle, a street artist, a feminist Liverpool ezine, an animator, a fashion designer and a ballerina will all explore the opportunities and possibiliteis for women working in the creative industries at The Playhouse next week.

CreatEVE House- Women in Creative Industries’ is a programme of creative workshops, masterclasses, exhibitions and events on the theme of Women In Creative Industries from Monday, March 7 to Friday, March 18.

Actor and Playhouse patron Eva Birthistle will join the debate at the programme’s a major conference on Friday, March 11.

Panel discussions across the day will explore changes within creative industries, the divide between ‘art’ and ‘industry’, artistic purity and public subsidy and Northern Ireland as a site of pioneering creative work. Panellists include Liverpool based Feminist Ezine Queen of The Track, street artists, animators, filmmakers, fashion designers and a ballerina!

The conference will finish with locally brewed beer, Pyke n’ Pommes and DJ Stray Kitten at the ‘Meet and Freak Event’; where attendees can discuss bursaries, apprenticeships, and receive financial and copyright advice the movers and shakers in the industry, including NI Screen, Audiences NI, Theatre NI, MakeMatic SHIFT Magazine, Chartered Accountant Deb O’Donnell and Niamh Hargan, a Solicitor specializing in media & copyright law.

Several Masterclasses will be held with established females in the creative industries including theatre directors, writers, journalists, publishers and bloggers, theatre technicians, filmmakers, visual artists, and women from digital technologies, including an introduction to digital fabrication at FabLab Nerve Centre!

Also running from Monday 7 to Friday 11 March in The Playhouse gallery space- ‘She Who Makes’, an Exhibition of weird and techie artwork from women in various creative industries.

“In this programme, just a few of the many bright female creatives among us are going to look at today’s creative work- give us a glimpse of working life in the creative industries, ask questions, and take a peek at the new value of culture and creativity in a so called ‘Knowledge economy,’” Playhouse Project co-ordinator Jessica Caldwell said.

“They have kindly offered to explore, over a cup of tea or locally-brewed beer, the significant gap between the percentage of women employed in the creative industries compared to the national average. They will give valuable advice to the brave ladies thinking about venturing into the very exciting sector. They are sharing the secrets of our economy’s greatest success story. The CreatEVE programme is funded by the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure.
