Free tours as part of ‘On the Brink’ project

Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, it enables residents and visitors to find out more about this crucial period in Irish history, and how it affected local people, through a short series of free guided tours.

Members of the public are invited to take part in four free tours, taking place on Thursday 11th June and Thursday 18th June in Coleraine; and Wednesday 10th June and Saturday 20th June in Limavady.

Each tour will be guided by local volunteers and a professional tour guide.

The tours are part of the ‘On the Brink: The Politics of Conflict 1914-1916’ project, delivered by the Causeway Museum Service in partnership with Mid and East Antrim Museums and Heritage Service.

Participants will visit important sites of remembrance relating to events of 1914 to 1916 and explore some of the stories of individuals caught up in those events.

Causeway Museum Service Officer, Helen Perry said, “As the centenaries of the Battle of the Somme and the Easter Rising approach, many people are interested in finding out more about these pivotal moments in history.

“The ‘On the Brink’ project is about discovering stories of local people caught up in the momentous political and social changes of 100 years ago. It explores the connections between local, national and international events. It also highlights why and how we remember these people and events today. The tours will provide an insight into local history at this time.”
