Funding to promote band’s music programme

Band practice now takes place in the Ebrington Centre, Waterside, at 8pm on a Tuesday night, and everyone is welcome, from experienced drummers and flautists to learners. Tuition will be provided.

The aim of the tutoring programme is to assist young people in the Londonderry area to learn to play a musical instrument. The grant will offset the cost of employing a tutor to teach both the marching snare drum and the b’ flat flute over a 20-week period.

“not only will this help the learner drummers and flautists improve their playing ability, but it will teach them the importance of discipline and rules which everyone learns on being part of a band,” said Band Secretary David McClelland.

“Anyone wishing to take part in the course are more than welcome to come along and sign up. Burntollet sons of Ulster is celebrating 33 continuous years of parading. Over those years the band has helped numerous young people learn to play a musical instrument, which in turn has given them something creative to do in their free time, as well as helping bring discipline and structure into their lives. We will gladly welcome anyone wishing to enrol in the course,” he said.
