Get your scarecrows at the ready for fair day

ORGANISERS of this year’s ‘Fair Day’ in Rathfriland have appealed to the entire community to get behind their Scarecrow theme.

It is hoped that scarecrows of all shapes, sizes and designs will start appearing throughout the town in the build-up to the big day on Saturday, 1 October.

Chairman of the Regeneration Group, Dr John Shannon said, “We really want to build up a bit of atmosphere and I am asking shops, businesses and individuals to get busy and get their scarecrows started.

“Plans are really starting to come together and we are looking forward to a great day that should appeal to the entire community.”

Visitors are also asked to get into character by dressing up in old Victorian clothes, while traders are coming on board with old-time window displays.

“Ideally, we would love to take the town back in time to resemble an old market street scene, with rare breed animals, a pet show, horses and sheep,” said Dr Shannon. “We also hope to have displays of various vintage vehicles and stalls selling a range of country produce and crafts.”

Also on the entertainment schedule is a fashion show of weddings through the ages and this will take to the stage in the afternoon, alongside street entertainers, buskers and children’s activities.

In the evening the crowds will be further entertained when Philomena Begley and The Miracles take to the stage.
