Sonic Academy was established in Belfast in 2003 as a quality music production training academy by Kevin Traynor - a former member of one of Ireland's most successful bands, The Divine Comedy and Phil Johnston, one of Northern Ireland's leading producers of electronic music. The idea behind Sonic Academy was simple – to provide quality face to face support for aspiring musicians, musicians, producers and DJs.

Sonic Academy has delivered successful projects on behalf of clients such as The Prince's Trust, BBC and Invest NI. In 2005, Sonic Academy co-founded the highly successful Urban Arts Academy - an annual creative industries training programme held at Belfast Waterfront Hall - run in conjunction with Belfast City Council. The programme is now the largest and most comprehensive event of its kind anywhere in the UK and Ireland.
