‘Giant’ search for young local filmmaking talent

FILMMAKERS aged 25 and under, from the UK and Ireland, are being invited to submit their short films to the annual Cinemagic Young Filmmaker Competition which honours the best of young filmmaking talent across different categories.

The judges are looking for imaginative and original short films, from any genre and the shortlisted entries will be screened in Belfast later this year. With support from Northern Ireland Tourist Board, there is a new category for 2012 entries (UK, Ireland and International) themed on ‘Giants of Northern Ireland’ as part of the ni 2012 ‘Our Time, Our Place’ programme. This category will celebrate the impact of ‘giant’ people, iconic landmarks and innovative thinking associated with Northern Ireland.

Cinemagic, funded by Northern Ireland Screen supported by DCAL, is dedicated to supporting and celebrating young filmmaking talent by bringing together young people with an interest in the film industry and offering them opportunities to view new films and participate in filmmaking workshops. Many young people who have entered films through the Cinemagic Young Filmmaker Competition have gone on to forge successful careers in the film and television industry.

Chris Shaw, Cinemagic Festival Programmer, encouraged young filmmakers to get involved and said: “The annual Cinemagic Young Filmmaker Competition offers young people the opportunity to submit their short film to Cinemagic and have it viewed by a panel of industry professionals. The films can be about anything at all, fact or fiction, comedy or drama, news programme or documentary. Whether you are a first-time filmmaker or developing your skills in filmmaking, the competition offers a great platform to showcase your work and enjoy the work of other like-minded young people.”
