Good Queen Bess comes to life at Island Arts Centre

THE golden age and drama of Elizabeth 1 comes alive at Lisburn's Island Arts Centre on Thursday January 27 at 8pm in 'I, Elizabeth' a fast-paced action-packed drama with a stunning female lead.

Rebecca Vaughan, who last year gave us Austen's Women, brings an intensity to Elizabeth I: who Queen at 25, political phoenix and famously unmarried, was the most educated woman of her Age - but who was the woman beneath the crown?

A five-star success in Edinburgh 2010, Elizabeth's Kingdom and key characters of her reign are woven together in complex plot twists with surprises that draws the audience in as the young queen steps from the shadows to unburden herself of her many troubles and reveal her innermost thoughts on marriage, succession, religion, war, and the challenges to her throne.

Using only Elizabeth's own words - adapted from letters, speeches and writings - I, Elizabeth illuminates a fascinating and insightful moment of decision in the young monarch's reign. Defying the establishment by choosing to lead her country alone.

I, Elizabeth is the first full production from Dyad, which creates, produces and tours classic theatre with an innovative and contemporary emphasis.

It is performed and adapted by Rebecca Vaughan, who - following the Edinburgh 2009 and Adelaide 2010 success of Austen's Women - continues her collaboration with director Guy Masterson (Olivier Award-winning Morecambe, Scaramouche Jones).

Authentic costumes are provided by Kate Flanaghan (Austen's Women, Bollywood Steps), and atmospheric sound design comes from composer/actor Waen Shepherd (The Inbetweeners, The Wall).
