Grooverobbers are European Tour’s preferred live entertainment

SO, who does the European Tour organiser book as the “preferred live band” for the Irish Open when Snow Patrol aren’t available?

Portstewart-based band The Grooverobbers of course!

The four piece group recently received confirmation that they have been chosen as the preferred live entertainment for the tented village which is being erected around Royal Portrush Golf Club for the forthcoming Irish Open.

Bass guitarist and vocalist Pip Loughrey told the Times: “We had played at Royal Portrush’s Jubilee Ball after the Secretary Manager there Wilma Erskine saw us at a wedding.

“Then about two weeks ago we were contacted by the European Tour who said we had been recommended and could we play on the Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights of the Irish Open?

“We had to work around other bookings we already had but we were delighted to be asked and be chosen as the preferred live entertainment.

“When the confirmation email came in from the European Tour, it read ‘If we can’t get Snow Patrol, Wilma says you are the next best bet’ which gave us a laugh.”

Along with the Pip, The Grooverobbers line-up consists of Aidan Moffett (lead vocals and guitar), Bud McDonald (lead vocals and drums) and Paul Donaghey (vocals and guitar).

“The band is very excited at the news. In fact, when we heard the Irish Open was coming to Portrush, Bud cancelled a holiday he had booked as we thought we might get a bit of extra work but we never thought we would get the Irish Open itself.”

You can also catch The Grooverobbers at the Red Sails Festival on July 28th at the Crescent.
