Groups in Festival funding boost

Thirteen community organisations across the borough have been successful in obtaining Community Festivals funding.

The fund will help the organisations stage a range of local community festivals and events during 2014 and 2015.

A range of events will be held as a result of the grant aid, including an exciting new event, the Coleraine Youth Festival which will take place in September.

Others include the Portballintrae 9th Halloween celebration event, local community based summer fun festivals and activities will be held in Windyhall, Millburn, Ballysally, Killowen, Moneydig, Articlave and Macosquin. There will be other planned larger scale events such as Coleraine Twelfth Festival of Culture and Portstewart Red Sails Festival.

The mayor of Coleraine, councillor David Harding congratulating the successful groups, said:“I am very impressed by the high level of interest and support registered by local community groups.

“I wish the groups every success with their planned events and look forward to enjoying the festivals and events to follow as a result of their achievement”.

Community Development Officer at Coleraine Borough Council, Karina McCollum added, “The Community Festival Fund 2014 is designed to improve the capacity and sustainability of community festivals within the borough of Coleraine and to enable organisations to celebrate their own unique identity, promote diversity and to strengthen community relations within and between communities.

“The successful applicants clearly demonstrated how their project would incorporate strong participation from the community and create opportunities for those participating in the planned activities by developing their skills base.

Applicants were also encouraged to provide an event that would be inclusive to all communities and appealing to visitors. The aim of this is to encourage local social, community and economic regeneration.

“Council recently hosted an Induction Training Workshop to support the representatives of the community organisations who were awarded funding”.
