Joe Mahon to visit Maghera Community Festival

MAGHERA Community Forum has been working for some time now to promote the town and to make it a better place for everyone.

Various groups in the town have been meeting for over a year and a half.A village Plan has been developed and funding is being sought for various projects within the town.

One of the things to come out of the Village Plan was the idea of a Festival which is now taking place on May Bank Holiday weekend to coincide with the Sperrin Rally.

Events for the Festival include: a Junior Soccer Tournament; Harley- Davidson Bike Ride Out; Fancy Dress; Market Stalls; Kidz Zumba; Traditional Music; Tea Dance; Treasure Hunt and Art Exhibition.

Councillor Kate Lagan, member of the Forum, said: “We are very happy to welcome Joe to Maghera for our History walk and talk on Sunday, May 6, at 3.30pm.

“It should prove to be a most enjoyable and informative afternoon. We have a very rich history, from the Vikings to Watty Graham and are most fortunate to have the remains of one of the oldest and most important ancient churches in Derry, St Lurach’s, with its famous lintel depicting the Crucifixion.”

It has been described as “ the most important single Romanesque monument in Ulster.”

I would encourage everyone with an interest in local history to come along. They will be made most welcome”.
