Join the Butterfly Safari

Many of us enjoy watching butterflies flitting from flower to flower on sunny days, the peacock, meadow brown and speckled wood to name but a few. So why not come along to your local park and go on a butterfly safari and discover the wonderful variety of butterflies living there!

Rachel Bain, Biodiversity Officer for Ballymoney, Coleraine and Limavady Borough Councils, explained, ‘As part of this year’s Big Butterfly Count we are running a series of Butterfly Safaris in your local parks. Why not bring the family down to explore your local park’s wildlife and help count the butterflies’.

Butterfly Conservation NI ‘Big Butterfly Count’ runs from the 16th to 31st July and is part of a wider UK survey. It can take as little as 15 minutes and is an ideal opportunity to record the butterflies you see in your garden, local park, or anywhere you fancy.

Butterflies react quickly to change in their environment which makes them excellent biodiversity indicators. Any recorded declines are a good early warning for the wider biodiversity.

For details on how to take part in this years Big Butterfly Count log on to www.bigbutterflycount.org and come along to you local Butterfly Safari Event any time between 2–4pm. Venues are:

Tues 26th July, 2-4pm, Dungiven Environmental Park, car park behind the health centre.

Thurs 28th July, 2-4pm, The Moors, car park at the end of Tunnel Brae beyond the caravan park, Castlerock.

Fri 29th July, 2-4pm, Riverside Park (beside the pond), Armour Avenue, Ballymoney.
