Keep your eyes out for UFOs this summer

Keep your eye out for some UFOs and space station landings over the coming weeks as Space Camps arrive in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.

Organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council as part of its Science and Innovation Programme, the Space Camp project encourages primary school children (ages 5-12) from across the Council area to sign up to a series of Space Camps where they will learn to build and launch their own rockets, explore the planets for signs of alien life forms and meet lots of new space friends.

The camps are scheduled to take place across a series of venues including the the Tower Museum, The Curiosity Gallery at Ebrington and the Derg Valley Leisure Centre in Castlederg at various times over the summer.

Priced at just £10 per child, demand for places is expected to be high and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Elisha McCallion said the Space Camps were a fun and innovative way of getting children interested in science.

“This is a fantastic project that will really engage with children and allow them to become an astronaut for a day and learn all about the solar system in a fun way. It’s part of the ongoing work we are doing to encourage more young people to enjoy the STEM subjects and to think about possible careers in science and technology,” she said.

Details of the camps are as follows: Tower Museum, Monday 20-Friday 24 July from 10 am to 2pm; Curiosity Gallery at Ebrington, Monday 27- Friday 31 July from 10am to 2pm and Derg Valley Leisure Centre, Monday 10 – Friday 14 August from 12 noon to 4pm.

The Science and Innovation Programme is funded by Derry City & Strabane District Council, Ilex and the Department of Culture and Leisure and features an array of curiosity themed events including The Curiosity Gallery at Ebrington, BT Young Scientist Exhibition, Formula Derr-E, SciFest, Maths Week, Brickwonders, Space Camp and Minecraft Nation.
