Killyglen retains championship title

Killyglen Accordion Orchestra has continued its success by retaining the British Advanced Orchestra Champions title at the National Accordion Organisation Championships, in Liverpool, at the weekend.

The orchestra performed “Symphony No. 9” by Antonin Dvorak and “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein.

The adjudicators awarded an overall “honours” rating with 93 points being scored for both pieces of music.

Their comments noted a “very entertaining performance with good dynamics, phrasing and accosting”.

They also praised the “excellent conducting” of the orchestra’s MD David Hawthorne.

In addition to the achievements of the orchestra, two of the members also had significant success in the solo accordion sections. Katie Bell was crowned Under 14 Polka Champion and Jonathan Wilson gained second place in the Under 17 Musette section.

The orchestra is now looking forward to a busy spring/summer season with a number of performances and summer concerts lined up over the next few months.
