Local groups take pride in city

THE outstanding work of three local community groups has been nominated by Derry City Council for inclusion in the all-Ireland Pride of Place competition.

Foyle Community Gardens Initiative, Learmount Community Development Group, and Maydown Community Association Seniors Group, have been selected through the Pride in our City Campaign, which supports Derry City Council’s entries in a number of environmental competitions.

The campaign’s primary aim is to enhance the greenscape and floral displays throughout the city, while raising public awareness and fostering civic pride.

Mayor, Councillor Kevin Campbell, said: “The work of all three of these local organizations merited special distinction for their efforts in improving their local community and enhancing the natural environment.

“Through their ongoing projects they have demonstrated what can be achieved when people work together to improve and change parts of their area for the good of the whole community.”

The successful groups will now go forward for judging in the national Pride of Place competition run by Co-operation Ireland, which recognizes the vital contributions that community partnerships make to society.

The competition is unique in that it celebrates the endeavours of a diverse range of individuals and groups within the local community who are involved in all aspects of rural and urban regeneration.
