Lurig Drama wins award

A GLENS of Antrim drama group has won the UK's leading amateur one-act play award.

Lurig Drama Group beat off challengers from across Britain to win the prestigous 77th British Final Festival of One-Act Plays at the weekend with their production of the Irish play 'Melody'.

The Cushendall-based society was one of four finalists to make it through to the awards, held this year in East Kilbride near Glasgow.

The other finalists were the Oasis Youth Theatre from Southampton, Cardiff's Unknown Threatre Company and Thistle Theatre Company from Greenock.

'Melody', starring Rosaleen Agnew and Pauric Dunne and directed by Nuala Connolly, is a Deirdre Kinahan play about a seemingly prim widow and clumsy bachelor who meet regularly on a park bench.

Festival adjudicator Dr Russell Boyce highlighted the "superb" quality of acting and the direction of the play.

'Melody' director Nuala Connolly said: "We're all delighted and thrilled to have won. It is a real testament to the wonderful acting talents of Rosaleen and Pauric.

"It's also a tribute to the high standards of amateur drama both in the Glens of Antrim and in Northern Ireland generally."

The festival was organised by the Scottish Community Drama Association, whose chairman, Keith Robinson, said the high standards guaranteed a "true feast of drama" at this year's event.
