His work includes operas, orchestral works, large-scale community oratorios, mixed media installations, films, theatre works, performance constructions, and dance scores, as well as numerous ensemble, solo and chamber pieces. In 2011 he was awarded an MBE for services to music.

He has worked closely with a diverse range of international artists from a wide range of disciplines in music from Jazz to Punk to Classical to Free Improvisation including Paul Dunmall, Keiji Haino, Joanna Macgregor, Keith Tippet and David Holmes as well as many of Europe’s leading orchestras.

The lecture will be illustrated with live musical accompaniment by the renowned saxophonist, Paul Dunmall, who is widely recognized as one of the most talented reed players on the international jazz/improvised music scene, and one of the most distinctive improvisers playing today. He regularly performs with Brian Irvine in the composer’s 14 piece band.

University of Ulster Chair of Convocation, Mary Campbell, said: “By inviting Brian Irvine, one of the University’s distinguished graduates, to give this lecture, Convocation is seeking to celebrate the University’s success and expertise with a wider audience. This is particularly poignant as Derry ~ Londonderry celebrates UK City of Culture 2013.
