Museum reprieve

COLERAINE Borough Council’s long-standing plan to build a museum on the site of the former market yard has won a last minute appeal for £4.2M of European funding.

The project was initially rejected by the Special European Programmes’ Body (SEUPB).

But Council lodged an appeal which involved a review panel hearing, a revised content application and a subsequent re-examination by the PEACE III Priority 2.1 Steering Committee who are charged with selecting which projects go forward for funding.

The result was a pronouncement by SEUPB on December 15th that the market yard project had been reconsidered and the committee was now recommending it “progress to economic appraisal stage”.

Work on the economic appraisal is being carried out by BDO Consultancy and began yesterday (Monday, January 16th). Once completed it will be presented to the steering committee for final assessment with a final decision expected in June.

Praised by councillors for his hard work in securing the appeal, Leisure Service Director Richard Baker, said he and lead officer Helen Perry were delighted at the news. “This represents a very positive development for the Market Yard project.”
