Myriad of events

A MYRIAD of exhibitions and workshops have been put together by Cathedral Youth Club manager, Jeanette Warke, in celebration of Community Relations Week, ongoing this week.

Under the auspices of the Youth Club and the Shared City Activity Group, there will be a flower festival in St Columb’s Cathedral all this week, which Mrs Warke said would add to the refurbishment of the Cathedral and add another dimension to the visitor attraction of the historic building. Among the arrangements is one celebrating the recent Royal Wedding and another celebrating the city’s new ‘Peace Bridge’.

“When you go into the Cathedral now it just catches your breath. The flower festival will add to that,” she said.

The events have been designed for every creed and faith. Yesterday, Tuesday, the Inner City Activity Group unveiled their ‘The Art of Life’ exhibition in vacant premises at the top of Artillery Street (Philip Gilliland’s offices). The theme is ‘Beauty of Our Own Landscapes’ and the event will showcase a range of art and photography by members of all communities in the city who take part in the Shared City Community Education Programme. Originally scheduled to take place in The Playhouse, exhibition-goers are asked to note the change of venue.

The Nerve Centre will be the venue tonight, at 7.30pm for the launch of the ‘Remembering the Past, Looking to the Future’ DVD. It features 43 stories from. families touched by ‘the Troubles’.

“This exhibition will allow the wider community to understand the impact the atrocities had on our community, and as well as that there are stories there from young people about how it effected their families,” said Mrs Warke, adding: “In the near future it is hoped will be published”.

Tomorrow, Thursday, at the City of Culture offices at 4pm, the ‘Our City, Our Culture: Small Steps Make a Journey’ book launch will take place. A joint inter-generational venture between the Cathedral Youth Club and the Centre for Learning and Development, it involves young people from the youth club alongside older members of the community who came together from all backgrounds to produce a book and learn about the history and heritage of the city.
