National Moth Night at Glenarm Nature Reserve

Ulster Wildlife is inviting everyone to Glenarm Nature reserve on Sunday, June 12, at 10am to open their eyes to the weird and wonderful world of moths by taking part in National Moth Night, the UK's biggest celebration of moth recording.

Moth traps will be set up the night before to catch nocturnal species such as poplar hawk-moth, peach blossom and map-winged swift which will be released for everyone to view.

Nature Reserves Manager and local moth expert, Andy Crory will be on hand to help identify and record the wide variety of moths found, answer questions and dispel common myths.

Andy Crory from Ulster Wildlife said: “Moths have the reputation of being rather drab and irritating compared to their butterfly cousins, but in reality moths are strikingly varied in everything from size, shape and colour to life strategies and unusual names. They’re also important pollinators and provide a vital source of food for birds, bats and other mammals.”
