No support for£21m gallery

A proposal to develop the Ebrington Clock Tower as an art gallery was knocked back because there was not enough support from ‘stakeholders’ or ‘funders’ for the £21m project.

SDLP MLA Colum Eastwood asked the Office of First Minister and Deputy First Minister (OFMDFM) why the proposal - contained in Ilex’s Ebrington Masterplan of 2006 - did not proceed.

OFMDFM replied that: “A Strategic Outline Case for the development of an Art Gallery, undertaken in 2011, was reviewed and it was unable to demonstrate the necessary support of stakeholders and funders required to generate the £21 million to enable the project to proceed.

“Ilex and its strategic partners will continue to explore the potential of developing the Clock Tower for viable projects within the current Ebrington Development Framework consultation process.”
