North Coast area set to go crazy for crafts this month

The North Coast area is ready to celebrate the ninth August Craft Month, with a packed programme of events taking place.

There are more than 150 craft-related events taking place in venues throughout Northern Ireland during August.

The local events are:

August 5: Tutor Louise McLean of Atlantic Craft NIwill also be teaching Textile Basketry at the same location, aimed at making a more contemporary styled basket, with willow.

August 4-7 and 11-14: Two four day pottery Masterclasses throwing porcelain with one of Northern Ireland’s leading ceramicists, Adam Frew at Flowerfield Arts Centre – make posts using porcelain clay on wheel under the guidance of the talented potter.

Aug 7 – Seaside Calligraphy at Portballintrae Village Hall with calligraphy artist Janet Millar .

August 7-8 and 14-15: Two two day lampworking workshops – glass beadmaking for jewellery at Flowerfield Arts Centre with tutor, glass artist, Catherine Keenan.

August 21 and 29 Introduction to Japanese Shibori and Indigo with Catherine Quinn – Flowerfield Arts Centre – Participants given two Tenugi (Japanese hand towels) and shown two shibori techniques. Plastic Fantastic – Make Plastic Jewellery – design and make your own piece of modern, plastic jewellery.

August 22 and 29 Make Yourself at Home – Paperclay with Rachel Dickson – Participants will learn how to construct a house using porcelain paperclay.

August 22 and 28 Intermediate Japanese Shibori and Indigo Workshop with Catherine Quinn.

Students will learn ancient technique called Arashi by making an indigo summer scarf and Shibori cotton handkerchief. Plastic Fantastic – Plastic Jewellery Making with Kirsty Martin.

August 28 & 29 Two day jewellery making with Diane Lyness

From now until August 22 – there is the magnificent Forming Words Exhibition at Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre, Limavady. This is a highly prestigious touring exhibition from Flow Gallery in London. This beautiful exhibition features the work of 19 leading international makers.

August 4-31 Textile Art Exhibition – Port na Gree House, Ballycastle wwith textile artist Eibhlin McCarry

August 7-29 Telling Tales exhibition at Flowerfield Arts Centre. Anne-Marie Robinson and Claire Gordon making highly individual hand built decorated pots and the other a textile artist telling Grimm tales using embroidered embellishment on wet and needle felt work. A remarkable show and not to be missed.
