NRC students hope to make the cut in UK hairdressing contest

NRC hairdressing students are on the fringe of joining the elite in a UK-wide competition.

The Wella Xposure contest is an opportunity for young hopefuls to show off their flair, skills and imagination. Gaining a place the regional heats is an achievement in itself and five aspiring stylists at NRC’s Newtownabbey campus are waiting for the call, having impressed the judges in a preliminary heat held at the college’s own Shine salon.

Gillian Douglas-Rea from Urban Fox and Ricky Woodside, Urban Fox creative director and photographer assessed the cuts produced by students after weeks of preparation and the winners - Robyn Dunbar, Krystal McAlvenny, Martyna Siwinska, Cara Turkington and Rhonda Kelly - are now submitting their entries to Wella in photographic format.

The competition organisers are looking for a unique and commercial cut from the NRC Level 2 and 3 students hoping to go head-to-head with contenders from all over the UK at a regional heat in Manchester.

Maxine Beckett, NRC lecturer, said: “The Wella Xposure competition is a fantastic opportunity to become one of Britain’s up and coming hairdressers.”

She added: “All the students worked exceptionally hard on their unique creations with their models and that they are to be congratulated for their creativity and motivation.”
