Recently, staff and patrons of this very popular establishment came together to put on a weekend spectacular which, so far, has raised £22,000 for two charities – Macmillan Cancer Support and Friends of The Cancer Centre.

Shirley McKinlay, who runs the Scenic, along with her daughter, Pamela and her husband Stephen McFetridge, were prepared to put their reputations on the line by saying they would raise thousands for an event that was held in memory of a former work colleague, Geraldine Linton who lost her battle with cancer several weeks ago.

The campaign got off to a flying start – literally – when 30 volunteers did a parachute jump. That set the scene for a real hive of activity at The Scenic.

A huge marquee was put up at the premises and the patrons rolled in by the score. The Saturday night entertainment was provided by an Abba Tribute band and Saturday Night Fever.

Support on the night heightened expectations of an even bigger crowd on the Sunday and the response prompted Shirley to state: “ Oh my God, it was unbelievable. The place was packed and everyone had a brilliant night.”

An auction contributed substantially to the total and when the final total is known, the proceeds will be divided equally between the two recipients.

It will also be a fitting tribute to Geraldine Linton, a dear friend of all at the Scenic is sorely missed by a large number of friends.

Shirley and her staff would like to place on record their sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to a memorable event.
