Renowned Swiss jazz singer comes to Lisburn's Island Arts Centre

RENOWNED Swiss Jazz singer Sarah Buechi comes to the Island Arts Centre on Friday February 19 at 8pm with her Indian-Jazz quintet Thali.

After graduating from Lucerne's prestigious Musikhochschule, Sarah took a lengthy sabbatical in Bangalore immersing herself in South Indian classical music learning south Indian singing and konnakol (the percussion-language).

Encouraged to perform carnatic (south Indian) music, Sarah soon began performing at festivals and on television.

The results are apparent in her use of its demanding rhythmic and vocal techniques in a jazz context that also reflects the influence of creative singers like Norway's Sidsel Endressen.

She's already making inroads in bridging the two traditions to create an arresting fusion of styles, and has been working with musicians like Kenny Wolleson and Nils Wogram.

Joining Sarah on their Island Arts Centre debut to play music from their freshly minted CD Vidya Mani are baritone sax specialist Matthias Tschopp, pianist Stefan Aeby, bassist Marco Mller and drummer Lionel Friedli.
