Romeo and Juliet ready to declare love all over again

THIS week, Scottish Ballet invites you to fall in love all over again with its powerful and vivid reinterpretation of Shakespeare's most famous love story, Romeo and Juliet.

On stage now through to Saturday, May 22, this exhilarating production was created specifically for Scottish Ballet by renowned Polish choreographer Krzysztof Pastor in 2008 and has since gained status as one of the Company’s most iconic works to date.

Pastor is renowned world-wide for his work as a freelance choreographer, perhaps most notably in residence with Dutch National Ballet, and was also recently appointed the Director of Polish National Ballet.

Set in the 20th century, this passionate story of forbidden love unfolds through three dramatic acts as time moves on inexorably.

Beginning in black-and-white in an Italian metropolis, Pastor shows a world torn apart by conflict with the aid of back projection of film of WW1 trenches.

The second act moves to the sepia-toned 1950s in the wake of Mussolini’s Fascist dictatorship. Finally, the third act is set amidst the backdrop of today’s warring nations, a land dominated by the eerie blue light of the television cameras that report 24/7 from the frontline of global wars.
