Second only to Burns, Robert Tannahill’s songs to feature in Tower lecture

Led by Dr Fred Freeman of the University of Edinburgh the lecture will examine ‘The Irish in Scotland: The Songs of Robert Tannahill’, focusing on a collection of Scottish songs written in defence of 19th Century Irish emigrants to Scotland, and how this changed perceptions at the time. A Fellow of English at the University, Dr Freeman’s skill as a music director and producer has contributed to his extensive writings and research.

Island Voices is in keeping with Derry City Council’s Music City programme for 2014, and seeks to explore our cultural identity through both language and music. The theme of the three fascinating lectures in this year’s programme focuses specifically on the musical heritage of the Irish and Ulster-Scots cultural traditions.

Education Officer with Derry City Council’s Museum Service, Margaret Edwards, said: “The Island Voices series provides a real insight into our local musical heritage, and how this has had a wider impact beyond these shores.

“Derry has always been a city of music and these lectures will touch upon the many facets within our shared culture which have influenced our musical journey through history.”

Pól Ó Frighil, Irish Language Officer with Derry City Council added: “This is the fourth year of the Island Voices series which is testament to how popular the event has become.

“This year’s lectures showcase the relationship between the Irish and Ulster-Scots musical traditions and explore the positive role that music can play in the context of good relations. I would recommend early booking as places at the lectures are always in high demand.”

The final lecture in the series will take place in the same venue on November 20, and this time two local speakers will focus on the relationship between the Irish and Ulster-Scots musicians here in the city, particularly in the build up to the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann celebrations in August 2013, and the Pan Celtic Festival in 2014.

Eibhlín Ní Dhochartaigh from Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin, and Derek Moore from the Londonderry Bands Forum will reflect on the open and honest engagement which took place between their respective communities in the lead up to 
the celebrations.

The Island Voices Series is funded under Derry City Council’s Good Relations Programme to promote language and heritage. All the lectures are free and lunch is provided. Places for the lectures are expected to fill up fast and booking 
is essential.
