Shining at community hub

The scheme is now in its sixth year and caters for children and young people with disabilities and their siblings. A total of 30 children from across the borough, aged between seven and 17, took part this year and had the opportunity to participate in a range of sporting and art activities.

“It is fantastic that we can offer these quality coaching sessions and arts workshops and to see the young people enjoy taking part. The scheme has been really successful and I am delighted to see it continue to go from strength to strength, it is a great testament to all involved,” said Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Carla Lockhart.

Shine is organised by Craigavon Borough Council’s Sports Development Unit with support from the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, who referred the young people to the scheme.

A number of sports activities were delivered by coaches from the Sport NI Lottery funded Active Communities Programme and some of the children were given the chance to sample five Paralympic sports, courtesy Disability Sport NI.

“All the participants put lots of effort into the activities and have fun trying new things. There is such a buzz during the sessions, both the staff and the young people thoroughly enjoyed all of the activities on offer and everyone participating experienced really sense of achievement,” commented Clare Weir, Community Sport Active Inclusion Officer.
